ABOYI, JOHNSON ONYEKE AND D.G. ISHOR

Abstract

This study examined loneliness and social isolation among elderly population in Zone C Senatorial District of Benue State, Nigeria, using Ecological Systems Theory as its theoretical framework. It aimed to produce findings that would provide evidence for social work, government programs, healthcare programs, and community programs working for the well-being of elderly people. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected using a mixed-methods research design. Based on an estimated sample size of 398 using Taro Yamane’s (1967) formula, results were reported based on a sample size of 398.The study identified illness, physical mobility constraints, conflicting demands, less social interaction, and insufficient social support, as factors related to loneliness and social isolation. The findings indicated that the experience of illness and physical limitations can limit elderly adults’ accessibility to family, friends, neighbours, and community resources, increasing their risk for loneliness and social isolation. It further reiterates the role of friendships, social networks and community participation as a form of enhancing sense of self and psychological wellbeing among elder population. Following these findings, the study suggests a focus on strengthening extended family and community structures, promoting frequent visits and interactions with elderly individuals, improving physical access to health facilities, among other recommendations such as introducing the use of affordable digital communication technologies whenever possible. The study also suggests that social workers, health care professionals, family members, churches, community leaders, and government agencies should work together to provide adequate interventions aimed at minimizing social disconnect for better living conditions among the elderly in Zone C Senatorial District of Benue State.
